Website or Google Business Profile: which comes first?

July 27, 2026 · 8 min read

Google Business Profile first, in almost every case. It is free, it takes an afternoon, and for a local business it produces more visits in the first month than a website will. Then build the website, because the profile alone caps out fast.

That is the whole answer. The rest of this explains why, and what each one is actually doing, so you can spend in the right order rather than the loud one.

What each one does

The profile puts you on the map

When someone searches for a business like yours nearby, the first block of results is the map. If you are not in it you are not in the consideration set, regardless of how good your website is. The profile is what puts you there, and it carries hours, directions, phone, photos and reviews without a website existing at all.

The website is where you are chosen

The map gets you into a list of three. The list is where people compare, and a profile is a thin place to compete: everyone has the same fields, the same star rating out of five, the same layout. Your site is the only surface where you can be better rather than merely closer.

The order that works

  • 1. Claim and fill the Google Business Profile. Correct category, exact hours, service area, phone, and at least ten decent photos. Free. Do this today, because verification can take days and the clock starts when you begin, not when you are ready.
  • 2. Ask your existing customers for reviews. This is the highest-return hour of work available to a local business and it costs nothing. Ten honest reviews changes how the profile performs.
  • 3. Build the site. Even a single page: what you do, prices, photos, hours, and one obvious way to book or call. This is the point where the profile stops being your ceiling.
  • 4. Connect them. Website field on the profile points at your site. Name, address and hours on the site match the profile exactly. Add the structured data so Google can read them without guessing - our free business schema generator produces that block from a short form, and you paste it into your site yourself.
  • 5. Then, and only then, worry about ranking further. Pages for individual services, the searches your customers actually type, and everything else that takes months.

Why the profile alone runs out

Three limits show up quickly, and all three are structural rather than something you can fix by filling more fields.

  • You cannot say much. Fixed fields, no room for the reason you are worth choosing, no space for the work.
  • You only appear for “near me” searches. Specific searches - a treatment, a dish, a style, a course level - return pages, and you do not have any.
  • You do not own it. Profiles get suspended, merged and edited by strangers suggesting changes. It happens to legitimate businesses and the appeal process is not fast. Everything on your own domain survives that.

The mistake that costs the most

Mismatched details. Your hours on the profile, on the site, on the booking platform and on the delivery app all have to say the same thing. When they disagree, two things happen: Google trusts all of them less, and someone arrives at a closed door and writes a review about it.

Pick one true version of your name, address, phone and hours. Use it everywhere, character for character. When something changes, change it in every place the same week. This is unglamorous and it is most of what local SEO actually is.

What this looks like by industry

  • Restaurants - profile first without question. Then a site whose menu is real content rather than a PDF, because the menu is what people came for.
  • Barbers and salons - profile, then reviews, then a site with published prices and a booking button into the system you already use.
  • Clinics and private practices - the exception worth noting. Trust does more work here than proximity, so the site matters earlier. Still do the profile first, but do not wait long.

If you only do one thing this week

Claim the profile, set the hours correctly, and add ten photographs taken on a phone in daylight. That is a free afternoon that outperforms most paid marketing available to a local business, and it makes the website you build later work harder when it arrives.

Questions people ask

Can I have a Google Business Profile without a website?
Yes. The website field is optional and you can point it at a social profile or leave it empty. The profile still shows in the map, still takes reviews and still gets directions requests.
Does having a website help my Google Business Profile rank?
It helps. Google cross-checks your profile against other sources, and a site with a matching name, address and hours is the strongest confirmation you can give it. It is one factor among many, not a switch.
How long does a Google Business Profile take to set up?
An afternoon to fill in, then days to weeks for verification depending on the method Google offers you. Start it early precisely because the waiting is out of your hands.
What if my business has no public address?
You can hide the address and set a service area instead. Plenty of legitimate businesses do this. Photographers and mobile services should.
